NATIONAL RALLY was held 5th November - in the Vicinity of the Martinborough Bridge

25 entries, two from Northern Districts, three from the Naki and the rest from CD contested the Rally.

Organising Committee = Brian Eccles, Pete Cousins, Ross Denton and Shaun Draper

Tongue out The days tasks while needing to test were also aimed to teach boating skills, while still maintaining that all important enjoyable day on the water. As far as possible the organising committee set tasks which minimised the advantage of having a faster boat.

Results will be in the upcoming magazine, with publication held back to allow inclusion of the Marathon and National Rally results. Joint winners were Darren Judd and Kelvin Fredrickson.

The picture below is of Dr Evil's First Aid crew waiting to test the next team.....................Congratulations to the Jennings team who won this event by a clear margin.

Summary of main points of October 12 Central Districts committee meeting.

NB: these notes are some of the matters discussed by the CD Committee and are presented

here for the information of CD members. Please contact a Committee member if you have

any concerns or suggestions.

Matters Arising: The planned CD Newsletter was derailed by the editors unfortunate illness, consideration is being given to send some of these articles electronically.

Safety: A non member sunk in Upper Rangitiki – it is understood that they holed on the trip up to do some hunting. After staying overnight, they headed home, the engine seized and the alloy boat sank in a rapid. A rope caught around the foot of one person could have had far wosre outcome. Learning points- It is likely the sump was holed by bolts on the unit being forced up in the initial crash, and oil loss lead to the seizure . CHECK YOUR UNIT FOR PROTRUDING BOLTS. They failed to make the sensible decision and had ample options to beach the boat and walk out.

Rivers: Richard Anderson attended a meeting in Wanganui to look at setting up a River Users Group similar to that operating in the Rangitikei. Further meetings of all concerned are needed. It was noted that the existing 5k rule at bar is impossible.

Skills and Training Buddy Day: Brian spoke about excellent success of the one on one teaching format.

Orura Run: Somewhere about 30 people in 12 boats, had a very succesful day and BBQ. This challenging run should become annual event.

General Business. -Discussion of holding a “Shed Night” one Friday in Hawkes Bay followed by a run the next day, looking to February . This as a way to kickstart interest in the area again.

-Discussion of phoning all members re National rally and the 40th. Especially targeting Hawkes Bay and Manawatu.

Next meeting set for TUESDAY 22nd November at Ruahine St

Sunday Sept 18th -Report on the "Buddy Day" a CD Skills and Training Day

Seven less experienced boatersUndecided were each matched up with a more experienced boater Cool together in a boat.

After launching at Gladstone shortly after 10.30am each team headed off with their laminated sheet of instructions with suggestions as to what to discuss and practice. There were the obligatory examples of running aground and one boat was left up the river after running out of oil. The river was in low flow and challenging. Lunch at Waddells bridge and an after match drink in the Gladstone Pubs garden bar ensured the appropriate socialisation occurred.

JBNZ Central District Committee meeting August 24 2011.

Activities.
Wellington Shed night – very successful over 15 people attended and highly recommended that other areas consider holding similar events.
Hawkes Bay- little happening in this area ,suggestions as to what might be needed are welcome.
The Patea Race was again succesful with two CD entrants.
National Executive are proposing to put $10,000 into some further academic research on the environmental effect of jetboat wakes, early indications are that this will again show wakes are not a significant environmental risk
Dobson River. There will be some changes to the timing of boating allowed in the Dobson area.
The Training and Skills Buddy Day has been postponed to Sept 18, ongoing work to ensure we match the number of trainers and trainees is needed.
The Rangitikei River Race planned for Aug 7 was cancelled, The race would have cost CD about $1000 without any prizes, early in the race week we had only three confirmed entries (one in each of the 3 classes) and two other possible entries; hence the decison to cancel was appropriate.
CD Magazine Extensive discussion of the cost of printed material/postage and logistics/ hassles of producing a paper magazine versus having a pdf magazines emailed to members and also posting stories on the Branch Website. The decision was taken to email where we can and post only to those members requesting a posted format.
Labour weekend Hawkes Bay . The traditional trip is overshadowed by the World Cup. Likley to do earlier trip instead on 10/11th.
Family Sprint at Tarenikau. The last event was very succesful so planning another is underway.
Next Cttee meeting planned for October 12th.

Past event – Upper Rangitikei River Run – Aug 14 2011

The forecast was terrible and many wimps withdrew. But in reality it was a great run thoroughly enjoyed by the 4 crews keen enough to give it a go. The river was at 3.5m which hid the worst of the rocks but not enough to make it bumpy. By lunch the showers cleared and the sun came out.

Report of Central Districts Committee meeting June 29th 2011

OPIKI- The Horizons Open Consent allows us to run one event a year at Opiki at no cost.
RIVERS
Brian Eccles (JBNZ) and Ross Denton (RRA) attended a SPARC meeting on what Information needs our organisations have about Lakes and River.
(SPARC is Sport and Recreation NZ whose role is to encourage same).
It was a most helpful and productive day with the ability to network and exchange views with a cross section of organisation. Some are similar to us(Yachting NZ and Rafting NZ), others are Organisation such as Fish and Game, DOC and Walking Access but also there were Regional Council Reps ( Tasman and Auckland Councils). It was helpful to hear what Councils look for in submissions about consents. It was a remarkably cohesive group, and positive views were expressed about the real need to work together. A full report will be available late August.
ACTIVITIES
Wellington:
Another Shed Nite is planned for Friday July 7 all welcome. Topic is "DIY blades"
Hawkes Bay.
About 33 boats at Shortest day run – one group of three thrown out of boat up at forks, the boat did a wee circle and came back to them rather amazingly....
Manawatu . A number of trips have been postponed with weather ( Bridge to Nowhere and Rewa trip) there were 4 new names booked for the Wanganui trip. Bridge to Nowhere now rescheduled for July 30.

Canterbury New Boaters program
It was reported at the National AGM that 60-65% of first time boaters without training ,who take their families up rivers, scare the family so much that they do not go again. Food for thought.

River Race Aug 7 . Likley will be- Bulls to Tangimoana, Tangi to Onepuhi , back to Bulls (76k) Contact peter Cousins.

40th Anniversary dinner with North Island rally will be at the Kingsgate
Contact Richard Anderson.

Next CD Committee meeting changed to August 24

Summary of ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held April 3 at Bulls Motel.

Clive Workman repesenting National Exec reports there is very little happening that they are

having to respond to. There are no obvious issues with the new way Exec functions.

Finances.

The main items that the Central Districts Capitation and Branch levies of $2065 was spent on

in 2010-11 were:

Local Magazine $517, Accountancy and Audit $450, National Conference delegate

expenses $396, AGM costs $240 and North Island rally $199. A surplus for the year of $717

increased the Club funds to $9676 putting us on a good footing for underwriting this years

events including National Rally.

Rivers.

Horizons are being most helpful on the Manawatu and Rangitiki especially with removing

dangerous railway irons and in the Consents process.

There is a looming issue with the lack of controls on the Wanganui.

We will submit on the Hawkes Bay irrigation dams, though as written it is not a problem.

There are currently lots of young non-member jetboaters in Ruamahunga area.

New Committee elected- see Committee page for details.

National Remits. To simplify the joining process, delete that Nat Exec needs to approve. This

step has never actually been a helpful process and removing it improves Insurance cover/indemnity.

National Conference in Tekapo. June 24-26.

A charter bus from Christchurch Airport at 9am Friday, back Sunday evening will make it ultra easy

and cheap for North Islanders to attend.(contact Brian Eccles for more info).

Discussion of retaining the “Flying J” logo despite some branches doing there own variations.

CD delegates were of the opinion no change is needed.

Cups. A large number of cups and trophies “lost” for some time have been recovered,

defer to next cttte meeting as to how to best use.

Significant points from March 16 meeting.

While we have been in discusion with NZJBRRA for some months about CD running a river race,

either on the Triple Rivers format or as a Full marathon, a decison has been made to NOT pursue

this. The financial risk to CD is significantly more than any overall benefit.

Consideration is being given to holding the monthly Cttee meeting in Woodville to see if this

encourages Hawkes Bay members to become involved again.

Safety. A very few members have been noted to not be wearing lifejackets at all times,

stratagies to address this foolhardy action were discussed.

Rivers . Proposed Irrigation Dams in Hawkes bay are no risk to boating.

New Members Consideration was given to appointing one meber of Cttee as Liason for new members.

As there is at least one nomination for all incoming Committee positions we hope this will

encourage CD members to attend AGM without fear they may get unwanted job....

Action Points from February 2011 Committee meeting Central Districts JBNZ

Planning for Morrisons Bush Camping Weekend Event- Feb 18-20 , all in hand Arrive Friday evening. Saturday event starts 10.30am Sunday start 9am home after 1pm Sunday

A condition is that 5 knots must not be exceeded within 50m of another person or craft in the water. Please note that 5 knots must be observed from the Ashhurst bridge for 300m upstream.
